Your mattress is one of those neglected items when it comes to cleaning your house. Yet, it tends to have some of the most exposure to skin oil, hair sweat drool, and so on. If you have a pet well, combine that with dust, allergens, and general indoor pollution.

1 . Vacuuming

First, remove all the bedding and throw it inside the washing machine for a quick wash while focusing all your attention on the mattress. Start with vacuuming the mattress. Let the vacuum roll over the top, underneath, and the sides. Lift the mattress and then vacuum the area in between the springboards and the mattress.

2. Baking Soda

In a bowl, add one cup of baking soda and add some drops of essential lavender oil. Then, use a strainer or filter to keep the mixture. Using the strainer, spread the baking soda and lavender fragranced mixture on the mattress in an even and consistent manner.

Let the baking soda work its magic on the mattress while the bedding goes through the washing and drying process inside the washing machine. Once the bedding is dry, use the vacuum to get the baking soda off it all over again.

3. Treating the Stains

Now, you have successfully removed any dirt, dust, the hair on the mattress. What about the stubborn stains, though? For those, you need to make a mixture of salt, water, and baking soda. Use enough baking soda and water to make a paste and not a liquid solution.

Rub the stained areas with the paste. Then, you will have to wait for 30 minutes to let the baking soda paste work its magic. Once it’s dry enough, use a clean, damp washcloth to wipe away the paste.

There’s the matter of the urine stains. If you have kids in your house, it can be a common occurrence. Sweats also lead to yellow stains forming on the mattress. Your mattress can start to look musty and smell awful due to it.

Treating these kinds of stains involves making a solution with 3 tbsp of baking soda,  hydrogen peroxide in 3 percent, and some dishwashing soap drops. Stir the mixture until you see the visible traces of baking soda disappearing.

Keep the solution in a spray bottle, and then spray it onto the mattress. Let the mixture soak into the stains. Then, let the solution dry for about an hour. If you want the drying process to go quicker, leave a blowing fan somewhere near the mattress. Or you can run your blow-dry over the mattress at a cool temperature.

Final Thoughts

Even at worst, you should try to clean the mattress every six months. If you can spare more time, make it three months. If you notice a stain on the mattress, clean it immediately instead of waiting for your yearly cleaning time.

Also, it’s better to shell some out for a mattress cover. Mattress covers prevent moisture from seeping into the mattress. It will keep mildew away.

On a more regular basis, vacuum your mattress every month to get rid of the dust. It would also be a good idea to flip your mattress now and then, in 3 months at least.
